چکیده

Isomeric compounds reportedly released by mature males o f Nezara viridula as attractants for conspecific females are evidently artifacts formed by dimerization o f (£)-4-oxo-2-hexenal. Additional analyses o f the male-specific volatiles from Italian, Australian, Brazilian, and Jap anese populations o f N. viridula verify that at least two distinctive pheromone strains exist, but an active synthetic pheromone has not yet been developed. Analyses o f volatiles from N. antennata and Acrosternum aseadum males are also reported showing that the native Japanese Nezara sp., and species in the sister genus Acrosternum, produce species-specific blends based on the same compounds as N. viridula: (Z)-a-bisabolene (l-m ethyl-4-(l,5-dim ethyl-(Z)-l,4hexadienyl)-cyclohexene), and transand cis1,2-epoxides o f (Z)-a-bisabolene. The trans-/cisI,2-epoxide ratio o f N. antennata is within the range found for most N. viridula populations, but the blend from Japanese N. viridula males deviates radically from those o f other conspe cific populations.

Pheromone attraction and cross-attraction of Nezara, Acrosternum, and Euschistus spp. stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in the field.

Detecting infestations of stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) using pheromones remains problematic, particularly so in the United States for the exotic stink bug, Nezara viridula L., and our native stink bug, Acrosternum hilare (Say). Therefore, we conducted a 2-yr on-farm study to examine the attractiveness and possible cross-attraction of the reported pheromones for N. viridula and A. hila...

Toxicity of Chromobacterium subtsugae to southern green stink bug (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) and corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Diabrotica spp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) beetles and southern green stink bugs, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), are pests on corn, Zea mays L., and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., as well as on cucurbits. Control of these insects has depended on chemicals. An alternative to chemical control is the use of biologicals. Use of bacteria, fungi, viruses, pheromones, and metabol...

Pheromone Blends of Predaceous Bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Podisus spp.)

Male predaceous stink bugs (Pentatom idae: A sopinae) in the genus Podisus release longrange a ttrac tan t pherom ones from a pair o f hypertrophied glands opening underneath the wings. Pherom one com positions are reported for four additional Podisus spp.: two N eotropi cal species (P. connexivus and an undeterm ined Podisus sp.), and two N earctic species (P. placidus and P. mucronatus). The chemical volatiles (semiochemicals) produced by neotropical stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae).

In recent years the growing concern about environmental changes and how we are using the natural resources have triggered a search for natural products as alternatives to synthetic pesticides. The stink bugs produce a wide variety of chemical compounds (semiochemicals) that show potential to manage these insects. The stink bugs Chinavia impicticornis (Stål), C. ubica (Rolston), Dichelops melaca...

Trap Cropping Systems and a Physical Barrier for Suppression of Stink Bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Cotton.

Euschistus servus (Say), Nezara viridula (L.), and Chinavia hilaris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are economic pests of cotton in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. The objective of this 2-yr study was to determine the ability of trap cropping systems, pheromone-baited stink bug traps, and a synthetic physical barrier at the peanut-to-cotton interface to manage stink bugs in...
